After they read an example text, they will begin to create a short story on the topic of their choice.įencing is a sport which builds character and confidence, and demands physical and mental discipline. Lastly, students will tie all of their skills together to create a short story. These exercises will span a variety of genres and allow students to imaginatively outline future creative works. Now that students have had a taste for fiction, they will expand their skills into short stories and novels with character and world building exercises. Students will read a few example texts of flash fiction (very short stories ranging from a few words to a couple of pages) and then create their own based on varied prompts and genres.ĭay 4: Character Building and World Building Now that students have started to create their own narratives, we will translate those skills to fiction. Prompted by excerpts of essays and memoirs from famous authors, students will create short works that explore their memories. Now that students have begun to explore their own feelings and emotions through poetry, they can begin to create a creative nonfiction narrative about their own lives. This is an opportunity for students to write about their own memories and emotions as well as the natural world. Students will read and create their own spoken word poetry, haiku, and ode.
In today's workshop, we will be reading and analyzing traditional and nontraditional poetry and creating our own original works based on the mentor texts. Katie Clover (Middle and Upper School Math Faculty)
